Leaving Suntory, Masataka Taketsuru founded
a company producing apple juice or apple
wine in Hokkaido to get money for building
his own distillery. Nikka originates in the
company Nihonkaju. Nikka is producing cider,
apple wine and apple brandy still now. Nikka
has two distilleries Yoichi and Miyagikyo.
Miyagikyo has a grain whisky distillery and
a bottling plant.
Nikka is famouse at the high whisky quality
and has the Scotch malt whisky distillery
Ben Nevis. But the company is now a part
of a big beer company Asahi.

Yoichi distillery was founded in 1934
in Yoichi near the sea at the neck of Peninsula
Shakotan. It was called first as "Nikka
Whisky Hokkaido Plant". There was only
one still at the beginning and the second
distilling was done in the washed same still.
Hokkaido has the natural features similor
to Scotland and is famouse with the good
nature and plenty of fresh seafood. There
is also peat moor and the water from the
underground. Once the local peat was used
in the distillery. Now six stilles and some
are heated by coal fire. The building made
of stones is standing since the foundation.

Miyagikyo distillery is Nikka's second
distillery built in 1969. The distillery
is moderner than Hokkaido. Eight stilles.
The situation is in the north of Japanese
main land and warmer than Hokkaido. The distillery
stands in the forest between River Shin and
River Hirose among some mountains.
This distillery was first called as "Nikka
Whisky Sendai Plant'. Later renamed as 'Sendai
distillery'. Miyagikyo distillery at present.
